The first day of school feels like a milestone for both child and parent. One minute they’re tumbling around in playgroups and nursery, and the next they’re pulling on a school jumper and stepping into a new world.
It can be exciting, emotional, and yes, slightly overwhelming. Between uniforms, lunches, and those endless YouTube videos of mums showing what’s in their school bag, it’s easy to wonder if you’ve forgotten something.
This guide is my calm, complete checklist for children starting Reception and Year 1 in the UK. Think of it as a gentle nudge through the practical bits, so you can focus more on the joy of watching your little one grow.
Uniform and Everyday Clothing
Every school has its colours, but the basics are the same. Here’s what works in real life:
- 5 polo shirts (white or school colour; supermarket packs are perfect)
- 2 to 3 jumpers or cardigans (1 with the school logo is usually enough)
- 2 to 3 trousers, skirts or pinafores (shorts are handy for September warmth)
- 8 to 10 pairs of socks or tights
- 7 to 10 vests or underwear (Reception children are still busy exploring and playing)
- 1 waterproof coat that’s truly waterproof
- Seasonal extras such as a sunhat in September and gloves with a warm hat in winter
Many Reception classes use outdoor areas or Forest School, so most schools ask for wellies and a waterproof coat to stay at school. Some even suggest a little bag of spare clothes for accidents or muddy play.
Shoes and Footwear
Shoes can cause the most debates, but here’s the simplest route:
- 1 pair of black school shoes, ideally with Velcro fastenings in Reception and Year 1
- Wellies if the school asks for them, usually kept at school
When buying school shoes, remember that UK brands like Start-Rite and Clarks build growing room into their sizing. Don’t size up again on top of this, or you’ll end up with shoes that slip and rub. If you measure at home, double-check the fit once they arrive.
PE Kit
Schools vary a little in their requirements, but most keep PE simple and affordable:
- 1 plain T-shirt (white or in house colour)
- 1 pair of shorts
- 1 pair of joggers or leggings
- 1 pair of plimsolls for indoors and/or trainers for outdoors
- 1 drawstring PE bag for everything to stay in
Label every piece, because PE socks are experts at disappearing.
Bags and Everyday Bits
Storage space is limited in Reception and Year 1 classrooms, so most schools prefer book bags instead of backpacks. Essentials include:
- Book bag (flat, easy to store on pegs)
- Water bottle (leak-proof and named)
- Lunch box if not using school meals
- Name labels for everything from jumpers to water bottles
Investing in good name labels will save you a world of stress when jumpers go missing.
Lunches and Snacks
Here’s the reassuring bit for parents:
- Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is entitled to free school meals. You can choose packed lunches if you prefer.
- Every child aged 4 to 6 in state schools also receives a free piece of fruit or veg each day through the School Fruit and Veg Scheme.
If you’re packing lunches, aim for balance:
- A starchy base like bread, wrap, pasta or pitta
- Protein such as eggs, chicken, tuna, beans or hummus
- Fruit and vegetables (at least one of each)
- Dairy or a dairy alternative
- Water (most schools ask for water only)
Do check your school’s allergy policy as many are nut-free.
Reception-Specific Comforts
Reception is a special stage, and a few extras go a long way:
- Spare clothes (pants, socks, leggings or shorts) in a named bag for class
- Hair ties in school colours
- Tissues or wipes
- Small wet/dry bag for muddy or wet clothes
A Final Word
Don’t worry about getting it perfect. The best list is the one your child will wear comfortably, you can wash and dry easily, and you can find on a busy morning.
Label it, keep it simple, and remember this season is as much about you letting go a little as it is about them stepping forward. Grace for you, comfort for them. You’ve got this. 💙
